Writing amounts in words here
If an amount appears in both words and figures on a bill of exchange or cheque and the two differ, the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable (Bills of Exchange Act, Chap. 82:31, section 9(2)). The Act applies to bills of exchange, and cheques are bills of exchange drawn on a banker (Part IV, sections 73 onward), so the same rule governs a cheque. Write the amount in words in full and make the figures match exactly, because the words decide any difference between them. Contracts are not covered by this section.
