What the labour law requires on a payslip

Somalia's Labour Code of 1972 (Law No. 65) was repealed by Law No. 36, the Somali Labour Law, signed on 24 December 2024 and published in the Official Bulletin on 31 December 2024 (Articles 218 and 219). The law has no article headed "payslip". Article 80 says payment of entitlements is proven by a payment document signed by the employee, or marked by thumbprint if the employee cannot write. The employer must keep it with the other important documents and produce it when a labour officer asks.

Article 79 requires wages to be paid in legal tender at the workplace on the last day of the pay period. Payment by promises, vouchers or coupons is prohibited. Workers who are not permanent must be paid at intervals of no more than 15 days, and permanent employees at intervals of no more than one month.

Deductions are limited. Article 85 allows only deductions the law or a collective agreement provides for, or repayment of an advance the employer can prove, and Article 84 says that an employee's entitlements cannot be reduced by seizure or assignment by more than one quarter. Article 86 requires employers to keep records of authorised deductions and wage records, and to produce records for the previous 36 months for inspection.
