Kenya's currency is the Kenya shilling, divided into 100 cents (Central Bank of Kenya Act, section 19). In words, write "shilling" for one and "shillings" for more, and add cents where there are any, for example "Twelve thousand four hundred and fifty Kenya shillings and fifty cents" for KSh 12,450.50. Small coins have limits as legal tender: 50-cent coins only for payments up to KSh 20, and smaller coins only up to KSh 5 (section 22).

On a cheque or any bill of exchange, if the amount in words and the amount in figures disagree, the amount in words is the sum payable (Bills of Exchange Act, Cap. 27, section 9(2)); a cheque is a bill of exchange drawn on a bank and payable on demand (section 73). Tax invoices, books and returns must be kept in Kenya shillings, and employees' wages must be paid in Kenyan currency.
